Which Sprinter to Choose for Van Conversion: 144", 170", or 170" Extended?

Buying a new van always requires careful thought. One of the most popular Class B vehicles is the Mercedes‑Benz Sprinter, an excellent choice for a camper van conversion.

Once you’ve chosen your manufacturer, another question comes up: Which Sprinter length should you choose for your build? Should you go with the 144", the 170", or the 170" extended? What are the differences between these three Class B vehicles?

With descriptions of each model and a few tips, you’ll be able to choose the Sprinter length that best fits your needs for your conversion. Each one has its strengths. The key is knowing what you need and what you want inside your van.

SPRINTER 144"

The Sprinter 144" is the most compact of the three models. Despite its size, it still offers enough room for a small kitchen, a sleeping area, and storage space.

This vehicle is too small for a family of four living the vanlife. However, for two people, it works very well.

Because it’s smaller, this model is extremely agile. It’s very easy to park, almost like a car. Since the distance between the front and rear wheels is short, the Mercedes Sprinter 144" offers excellent off‑road performance. It’s the best Class B van to prioritize if your trip includes technically demanding roads. It’s also very convenient in the city thanks to its shorter length, making parking much easier.

The total length of the Sprinter is 233.5", with a 144" wheelbase. The vehicle width is 92.3".

The Sprinter 144" is available with either a standard roof or a high roof.

The standard roof (height 96.3") has a payload capacity ranging from 4211 lbs to 6812 lbs, depending on the model. Higher‑output engines and AWD increase payload capacity. Models include: WORKER, 2500, 3500, 3500XD, and 4500.

The high roof (height 107.5") is available only in the WORKER model, with a standard output engine. It can carry up to 4133 lbs.

SPRINTER 170"

Naturally, the Sprinter 170" is longer, giving it more interior space. The ceiling is also higher, allowing room for a larger kitchen, a full bathroom, and a more spacious sleeping area. Even though this Sprinter is bigger, it still drives well. It strikes a good balance between comfort and handling. It’s ideal for a small family heading out on a road trip.

The total length of the vehicle is 274.3", with a 170" wheelbase. The width is 92.3".

It’s a bit more difficult to park, but with a backup camera, it’s very manageable. This model is a great choice if you want more interior space, especially if you’re traveling with more than two people. It’s slightly less capable off‑road, so it’s better suited for paved roads.

The Sprinter 170" also comes with a high roof (height 107.3"). Its payload capacity ranges from 3814 lbs to 6382 lbs. 

Among the models, the 3500XD is the only one with AWD, giving it a higher payload capacity (around 5000 lbs). Like the 144", the 170" comes in 2500, 3500, 3500XD, and 4500 versions.

Despite being longer, its maximum allowable weight is lower, meaning the 144" can carry more payload than the 170".

SPRINTER 170" EXTENDED

The Sprinter 170" extended is the largest Class B vehicle offered by Mercedes. The wheelbase is the same as the 170", but the extra length is added behind the rear wheels. The total length is 290", which is 15" longer than the standard 170". The width remains 92.3". This model offers the most interior space and the highest storage capacity.

Although the storage space is impressive, this Class B vehicle is more difficult to park. The long rear overhang means the underside can scrape when driving over road imperfections.

The Sprinter 170" Extended comes with a high roof (height 107"). Its payload ranges from 3704 lbs to 6250 lbs. The 2500 and 3500XD models offer AWD, and several versions come with higher‑output engines.

Your choice of Sprinter length also depends on the duration of your trip. If you’re traveling for a long time or need a four‑season van, the 170" extended is an excellent option. You’ll need summer and winter gear, which requires plenty of space.

Which Model Should You Choose Based on Your Profile?

Choose the Sprinter 144" if:
